She had left her note, she had made her phone calls, and she had said her goodbyes. Everything was set for her visit with Dr Knox. And, surprisingly, Chloe didn't feel nervous at all.

As she waited to be seen by the doctor, she flipped idly through a magazine in the small waiting room. There wasn't much else to do now.

Dr. Curtis Knox opens the door from the examining room and steps out into the waiting are. "Miss Sullivan. Right on time. Thank you for coming on such short notice."

And in the end, she didn't have to wait long at all.

Chloe stands when Dr Knox walks out, a small but genuine smile on her face. "I'm just glad my test results proved I could have the procedure."

The doctor returns a reassuring smile and then glances down at her patient chart. "You're one of a kind. The level of meteor rock concentration in your heart-- it's extraordinary."

She tries to look at the chart in his hand, clearly taken aback by his statement. "In my heart?"

"Just relax," he says soothingly, placing her chart aside. "After tonight, you'll have nothing to worry about."

She walks slowly into the clinical room slowly, glancing around with a small frown on her face. You don't survive teenagerdom in Smallville without picking up a thing or two on the weird-o-meter.

Chloe looks back at Dr Knox, raising an eyebrow. "Where are all your staff?"

Another smile, this time a bit more placating. "They'll be here shortly." He pulls a handkerchief out of his pocket.

Oh, she's noticed that handkerchief, Dr Knox. Chloe's eyes narrow in on it and she looks up at him, momentarily distracted by a grunting sound coming from elsewhere in the room.

"What is that?"

Knox isn't as fast as he used to be and when the light dawns on Chloe's face and she gives chase, she almost gets away.

Almost.

Once he's caught up with her, he grabs her by the arm and then smothers her face with the handkerchief. "Shhh. This will all be over soon." And then she's limp in his arms, ready for her procedure.

When Chloe wakes up, she's strapped to a table and there's a harsh light hanging over her. She blinks a few times as Knox comes into view.

Her heart starts to pound. She's been kidnapped too many times in the past to know this isn't the procedure she hoped for.

"What are you doing?"

He smiles, indicating a dark-haired woman similarly strapped to a table beside Chloe, although this woman is completely unconscious.

"Taking your heart and giving it to Sophia," he explains, gazing lovingly at the brunette. "Thanks to you, Chloe Sullivan, my love will last forever."

Chloe turns her head to look at the woman on the table next to her. Her panic disappears into worry and she looks back at the doctor.

"If your wife is sick, I can cure her with my abilities."

She'd much rather take her chances with that.

That's sweet. Really. And on some level, Knox wishes it could be that easy. But it's not.

"Sophia's perfectly healthy. I've induced her coma simply to reduce her stress before the procedure."

From: [identity profile] torch-reporter.livejournal.com
Reduce her stress. In other words, lie to her. By now, Chloe likes to think that she knows a thing or two about lying to significant others. And how nothing good ever comes of it.

Nor does telling the truth.

A lie might not get her out of this situation, but maybe the truth might. Chloe shakes her head and gives Dr Knox another look.

"You put her in a coma because you knew that she would freak if she knew that you were playing fatal games of operation with innocent people. That doesn't sound like eternal love to me."

"You've been around, what, two decades?" Knox takes Sohpia's hand and shakes his head at Chloe. "What do you know about true love?"

"I know there's someone that I want to live to see again," Chloe protests, tears stinging her eyes as she thinks about Riley. "I really, really want to see again."

"A schoolgirl crush. Very quaint. Unfortunately, you won't be able to say goodbye." There's a brief pause to let that sink in and then he pats the table and walks back around to Chloe's other side. "Now, let us begin."

He didn't know anything. What she felt for Riley was far from a schoolgirl crush. And now, more than ever, she really wanted to get back to him.

"I came here for help," she snapped back, "not to be cut open by some Jack the Ripper wannabe!"

Knox smiles placatingly at her, and removes a large scalpel from a set of medical tools beside Chloe's table.

"I was Jack the Ripper. I promise, I'll make this quick." From there, he places the scalpel at the top of her chest, and starts to cut.

From: [identity profile] torch-reporter.livejournal.com
She stares at the scalpel with fright. There's so much she still has left to do. So many people she has to apologize to.

This isn't how Chloe Sullivan wants to die. Not at all.

As Knox begins to cut her chest open, Chloe can't help but scream.

Clark feels like he hasn't stopped moving since he talked to Riley and returned from Milliways. Finding Knox had been easy enough. What was unexpected was to find him in an altercation with Lex. He had no choice but to intervene, and then waited for Lex to come to so he could answer a few questions.

If Knox and Luthor were working together, there's no telling how much trouble Chloe was in. But it turned out not to be the case and surprisingly, Lex actually helped him determine where Knox would have taken Chloe.

And then Clark was off again, bursting into the lab moments after the knife cut into Chloe's chest. Speed and strength combined, he tossed Knox into the wall behind them and then returned to the table.

"Chloe."

It was then that the weakness hit him. Green K, liquefied in jars, keeping the other organs alive.

Figures.

"Clark!"

The look on her face immediately went from relief to horror when she saw Clark stumble. Why hadn't she noticed the green glow before? Metropolis wasn't that far removed from Smallville, after all.

She struggled against her bonds as Curtis gloated. "Your powers might be far beyond those of mortal men, but you've met your match. "

Clark could bare;y struggle to his feet before he noticed Knox had grabbed an axe - a really big one. It took almost all his strentgh to stop it from connecting with his face. Knox was either super strong, or Clark was weaker than he thought.

"I won't let you kill anyone else." And especially not Chloe.

Knox, however, was just as determined to continue his work, and the two of them started a tug of war over the axe handle. "I'd kill a thousand more to never have to be alone." He gleaned the upper hand, then, butting Clark in the face with the blunt end of the weapon, sending him reeling against a wall. "You don't know the pain of living centuries watching the women you love grow old and turn to dust!"

All Clark could see was the blade coming right toward him again, and somehow, he managed to duck out of the way, instantly grabbing the handle in an effort to pull the new embedded axe out of the wall. And it was an effort. "You and I are more alike than you think."

The doctor appeared to have the same idea, but abandoned it quickly in favour of simply punching Clark in the face, sending him to the floor. He easily removed the axe and went after Clark once more. "I won't go through it again!"

Once more, Clark's reflexes took over and he was able to, well, fall out of the way, the green k still glowing around him. And rather than meeting the mark of a vulnerable alien, the axe smashed into the life support system keeping the Knox's beloved Sophia alive.

Still strapped to the table, Chloe has no choice but to watch the fight. When Knox grabs the ax, she shouts out. Just how high are the kryptonite levels in the room? Too high, she supposes, and screams out to Clark when he crashes in the wall.

It's one thing if she dies. It's another thing entirely if her best friend dies for her. Even if this is Clark's life, his responsibility, Chloe can't stand seeing him hurt. She struggles further against the straps.

And then, as the axe crashes into the life support system, the room falls silent. All that can be heard is the crackling and hissing of escaping air and the flatline of a heart dying. Knox falls to his knees in front of the cracked glass and Chloe can only guess at the tears streaming from his eyes.

"My god. What have I done?" He reaches in to hold his beloved Sophia, cradling her in his arms as her heart gives out. "No, no. No. No! What have I done? No. No. Please don't leave me. Please. Look at me."

But it's over. It's all over. And as soon as Clark frees her, they'll leave for high authorities to take care of.
